Defiance county was created on March 4th 1845 by combining parts of Williams, Henry, and Paulding counties.  It was named after Fort Defiance which had been key to keeping the British from invading Ohio during the war of 1812.  It became an important agricultural hub after the swampland was drained in the mid 19th century.
