County # 35
Explore our record of Henry County's markers through our notes, map, and photos.
The people of the Ottawa tribe were some of Henry counties earliest inhabitants. Their settlements were found primarily along the Maumee river. Henry county was formed in 1820, and named in honor of Patrick Henry. At this time the majority of the county was uninhabitable swamp. Problems in Europe and the completion of the Miami and Erie canal brought the county its first wave of German immigrants. These immigrants were instrumental in the transformation of “the great black swamp” as it was known into farmland.
